Abstract

In this paper we present our view of proactive information retrieval as a complementary interface to an index-based search engine. Relying on its global view of the available contents, the system would identify semantic relations between disparate sources of information, and provide the user with improved awareness of the available opportunities and alternatives. We outline functional requirements for the system, and propose some initial steps towards implementing it in practice. We de- scribe our testbed, which enables us to evaluate the performance of alter- native implementations instantaneously. We also compare and contrast our approach to some previous work.
